He would then dump the bodies, usually naked and often placed in specific poses. He would have sex with them, in his truck, home or some other remote location and after having had sex he would strangle the women. Ridgway’s MO (Modus Operandi) was to lure sex workers and other vulnerable women into his truck, usually in the Pacific Highway South region. In the early 1980s, a task force was set up after many of the murders were linked, due to the similar nature of the murders and disposal of the bodies. Many of the bodies were found near Green River, which led to the name “Green River Killer”. After this murder, Ridgway killed another 40 women between 19. The body of a 16 year old girl was found by Green River, Washington, which had been there for a week. In July 1982 the first victim was discovered. He was arrested for a second time in 1982 for solicitation. The second marriage ended in 1980, and in the same year Ridgway was arrested for choking a prostitute, who he claimed had bit him. Ridgway also became very religious during his second marriage, but despite this he continued to be obsessed with sex, even requesting sex in public places, with both his wife and sex workers. He had a son with his second wife, and he would later use photos of his son to gain the trust of the women he killed.
Ridgway married again, but after both were unfaithful, they also divorced. His wife also had affairs while he was in the military, and as a result they divorced after having being married for a year. During his time in the military, Ridgway would have sex with prostitutes he would even continue his activity after contracting gonorrhoea. He went to Vietnam, where he saw combat while working on a supply ship. Upon leaving school, Ridgway married his high school sweetheart Claudia Kraig, and joined the Navy for 2 years. He was even held back a year in High School, but he still managed to graduate from Tyee High School in 1969, when he was 20 years old. Ridgway was Dyslexic, and struggled with school. The boy survived, but this was an early sign of problems with Ridgway’s behaviour. At the age of 16, Ridgway lured a 6 year old boy into the woods, where he stabbed him. These experiences growing up likely contributed to Gary Ridgway’s choice of victims. Mary Ridgway was a controlling woman, while Thomas Ridgway would often complain about the sex workers where they lived. He grew up in a troubled home, with both his parents arguing violently on a regular basis. His parents were Mary and Thomas Ridgway, and he had two brothers. Gary Ridgway was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on 18th February 1949. The murders were all carried out in Washington, USA. Ridgway was arrested by Police on 30th November 2001, almost 20 years after his first murder. Most of the women were strangled after Ridgway had had sex with them. It is possible that he actually killed more than 80 women, who were mostly vulnerable women and girls, including sex workers and runaways.
